Who Is This Mighty Pirate???
Edward Teach is a man of mystery even from his origin. Where he came from exactly and who his relatives were remain questionable. Edward Teach is best remembered not by his wealth or successes but by the images he chose to create about himself. Little is known about Edward except that it is believed he was born around 1680 in Bristol, England. As far as true identity, little is known. The name Teach as also known as Thatch, Tash, Tach, and even Drummond. Edward Teach is considered his standard name even though many believe it was just an alias to protect his relatives and love ones at home (wherever that may be).

Edward Teach was believed to be quite literate and intelligent. He could read and write very well. His character was somewhat confusing. He was a caring and generous man to those who treated him the same and cooperated with him, but he could be quite ruthless to those who opposed him. He was not considered like all other pirates who had to torture and use barbaric methods. All Edward Teach was interested in were the jewels and other precious cargo, not the victims.

Teach As A Ladies Man. . .
Even though Edward Teach was at sea quite a lot, he seemed to have the time for his lady friends. In fact, it is rumoured that he had at least fourteen wives. He lived hard but loved hard also. He treated his ladies kindly and lavished them with the wealths he brought back home. Many historians believe that most of his "marriages" were not legitimate since they occurred aboard ship. His last marriage, to a sixteen year old lady named Mary Ormond, was the only one to be recognized since it was "properly" carried out. This marriage only lasted less than a year because Teach was killed shortly after.

Drawn Into Piracy!!!
Edward Teach received his calling into piracy around 17l6. He met the well-known pirate Benjamin Hornigold who took him in as an apprentice. Teach learned the trade quickly and became quite a great student. In early 1717, Hornigold gave Teach control of a sloop, and together he and Teach caused much alarm and fear among the merchantmen. Because of Teach's ability to command, Hornigold gave him authority to claim the newly captured CONCORD for himself. This ship soon was to become Teach's QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE.

The QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE soon became the fear of the seas. With 40 guns and great speed, nothing could stop it nor Teach. Teach would not run from anything whether it be a warship or "treasure" ship. Because of his fearlessness and skill, Teach attained a sense of respect from other pirates as well as other sailors.

Edward Teach acquired his name "Blackbeard" due to his own creation. He chose to create this image in order to make fearful of those with whom he came in contact. If his ship was frightful then he should be also. In fact, because of his devilish nature and appearance, the enemy would soon surrender at first site of him. This was to be the image and effect that Blackbeard had hoped for.
